Because her work had links to aristocrats and royalty, she was imprisoned during the Revolution, reportedly alongside her mother. After her release, freedom came with a terrible condition: she was forced to make wax death masks and heads of executed figures, preserving faces marked by the guillotine. She survived by turning fear into craft. Later, she took her wax collection to Britain, built a travelling exhibition, and became a legend whose name still stands for lifelike figures and captured history. ------------------- Lyrics: Boots outside, began to run The bells rang wrong at morning sun They tore the gold from every gate And called my little craft, my fate They found me where the wax was warm A woman caught, forced to conform Said my hands had served the throne So now those hands were not my own Mother beside me Fear in her breath Stories written Too close to death I had no weapon No flag to raise Only my fingers And one skill to trade [Chorus] Press the wax Close the eyes Give the dead Their last disguise Make the mask Make it fast Or my name Becomes the past Hold my breath Keep my hands Still as stone On their command Press the wax Don’t look back Life is quick When the blade comes down like that They took me through the prison door La Force was colder than the floor They cut my hair, or so they planned A number waiting for my hand No music came, no mercy spoke Just iron cups and dirty smoke And every night I kept my head By making busts of the dead Mother beside me Skin nearly grey Hope was a button Coming away I did not beg them I did not scream I hid my terror Where no one could see [Chorus] Press the wax Close the eyes Give the dead Their last disguise Make the mask Make it fast Or my name Becomes the past Hold my breath Keep my hands Still as stone On their command Press the wax Don’t look back Life is quick When the blade comes down like that Make the masks, make the masks Of all the faces that I knew Make the masks, make the masks Of the friends they dragged me to Make the masks, make the masks Of my friends who lost their heads Make the masks, make the masks For the living and the dead Then freedom came, but not as light It came with orders dressed in white They put the fallen on display And told me what my hands must say Every new feature Bought me a day Every still eyelid Kept death away I was not cruel I was not brave I was a woman Refusing the grave [Chorus] Press the wax Close the eyes Give the dead Their last disguise Make the mask Make it fast Or my name Becomes the past Hold my breath Keep my hands Still as stone On their command Press the wax Don’t look back Life is quick When the blade comes down like that Years rolled over every street The drums grew faint beneath my feet I crossed the roads, I crossed the sea And carried all their ghosts with me The crowds came in with coins and eyes To see the dead almost arise If not for kings, not for the blade But for the woman history made They knew my work before my pain They knew the wax before my chains But every figure standing tall Was proof I had survived it all ------------------- 𝕃𝕪𝕣𝕚𝕔𝕤 𝕓𝕪 𝕁𝕓𝕠𝕪_𝟚𝟝 © 𝟚𝟘𝟚𝟞
